The Moment the Range Hood Roared, I Was Afraid He’d Wake Up

It was Friday evening at 6 p.m. — the dinner rush, basically a battlefield in the kitchen.

I was searing a steak, oil sizzling in the pan, the range hood on full blast. The kitchen was filled with loud white noise. In that noise, I was practically deaf. I couldn’t hear anything happening in the bedroom.

In the past, moments like this always gave me “phantom hearing.” I’d imagine the baby crying, rush into the bedroom every five minutes to check on him, only to find him sleeping peacefully. And because of that, I burned more than a few dinners.

But this time was different. The AnKeKe monitor was sitting right next to my spice jars.

Suddenly, the screen lit up and an urgent

But my pan was full of hot oil. I couldn’t just walk away! If I ran to him immediately, the steak would be ruined — or worse, the pan could catch fire.

I didn’t panic. I pressed the microphone button on the monitor and said loudly, “Baby, Mommy’s here! Mommy’s coming right now!”

And then something amazing happened.

Hearing my voice coming from that little white device, he froze for a second. The cry he was holding back stopped. He started looking around, trying to find where the sound was coming from.

Those precious 30 seconds were all I needed.

I calmly turned off the stove, took the steak out of the pan, and washed my hands. When I walked into the bedroom and picked him up, he wasn’t crying anymore — he even gave me a little smile.

That night, it could have been either a burned steak or a baby crying himself into exhaustion.

But because of that one feature, we had a perfect dinner and a calm, happy baby.

It was mid-November. My son was just 4 months old.

At 2 PM, my wife got a terrifying call. Her father had been in a car accident. She grabbed her bag and rushed to the hospital, leaving the baby with me. It was the first time she had been gone for so long.

I remember thinking,

I had no idea.

I hung up and rushed to warm a bottle. The second the milk touched his lips,

That night, I set up the AnKeKe monitor.
